Right to vote denied or abridged
Right to vote denied or abridged was an 1870 census column, marked for male citizens 21 and over who were barred from voting for reasons other than rebellion or crime.
The 1870 schedule had two columns for men. The first marked male citizens of the United States aged 21 and up; the second marked those whose right to vote was denied or abridged on grounds other than taking part in rebellion or a crime.
The 1870 instructions say representation in Congress depended on these answers. A mark in the citizen column for a foreign-born man suggests he had been naturalized by 1870.
