Supervisor's district
A supervisor's district, or S.D., was the larger census area run by one census supervisor, who hired and oversaw the enumerators in it from 1880 on.
The 1880 law created supervisors of the census, at least one for each state or territory, who proposed the enumeration districts, picked the enumerators and checked their returns. The 1900 instructions open each sheet with the supervisor's district number.
From 1900 the supervisor's district number was written at the head of every sheet next to the enumeration district number, and the 1940 sheets still carry both as S.D. No. and E.D. No.
