Ward of city
Ward of city is the census heading for the numbered district of a city, written at the top of each page; in Louisiana, ward also named a division of a parish.
Many cities were divided into numbered wards. In 1870 the numbering of houses and families started over at each new ward, and from 1900 the enumerator wrote the ward number at the head of each sheet and finished one ward before starting another.
Knowing the ward cuts a big city search down. The 1900 instructions note that in Louisiana the divisions of parishes were themselves called wards.
