Acknowledgment
An acknowledgment was a Quaker member's written apology to the monthly meeting for breaking the discipline, which let them keep their membership.
When overseers reported an offense, the member could send the meeting a paper acknowledging the fault and condemning it. If the meeting accepted it, the matter ended, and the minutes may simply note ack or the paper was received.
Acknowledgments often follow a marriage out of unity, which can date a marriage that left no other record.
