Hicksite
Hicksite refers to one side of the 1827 to 1828 split among American Quakers; the other side was called Orthodox, and each branch kept its own meetings and records.
The split followed the ministry of Elias Hicks, a traveling minister from Long Island, and divided Philadelphia Yearly Meeting into Hicksite and Orthodox branches. Many monthly meetings split in two.
Records from before the split generally stayed with the branch the recorder joined. If a family seems to vanish after 1827, look in the other branch's records. Abstracts may note jas, joined another society, for a move between branches.
