Monthly meeting
A monthly meeting was the basic unit of Quaker church government, meeting monthly for business and keeping the members' births, deaths, marriages and removals.
The monthly meeting handled membership, approved marriages and removals, maintained discipline and reported to the quarterly meeting. Its minutes and registers are the main Quaker records for genealogy.
One monthly meeting often covered several meeting houses spread across county and even state lines. Men's and women's meetings usually kept separate minutes, and both are worth reading.
