Lent is the forty-day season of fasting before Easter, beginning on Ash Wednesday in Western churches.
Lent is the season of fasting and penance before Easter, echoing the forty days Jesus fasted in the desert. In Western churches it begins on Ash Wednesday and moves each year with Easter.
Church dates are sometimes given as Sundays in Lent, such as the third Sunday in Lent. Find Easter for that year and count back to get the calendar date.
