French words in old records · card V

veuf

Veuf is French for "widower"; veuf de followed by a woman's name tells you whom he had been married to before.

A groom described as veuf in a marriage entry had been married before, and the entry may name the late wife, which points you to an earlier marriage and perhaps older children. Quebec indexes and registers sometimes shorten the word to vf.

The female form is veuve. In French records the word follows the person's name, so Théotime Brûlotte, veuf de Marguerite Pelchat, is Théotime whose wife Marguerite had died.
