French words in old records · card V

veuve

Veuve is French for "widow"; veuve de with a man's name names her late husband, and it is often shortened to Vve or Ve.

A woman described as veuve de with a man's name had outlived that husband, so the word gives you both a marriage and a death to look for. In French Canadian records it is often abbreviated vve or ve, and an 1834 commentary on French notarial law listed ve for veuve among the few accepted short forms.

The male form is veuf, shortened to vf.
