viduus

Viduus is Latin for "widower," a man whose wife had died; in a marriage entry it marks a groom marrying again.

Viduus is the male counterpart of vidua. In a marriage register, a groom described as viduus has been married before, which sends you looking for the first wife's burial and any children from that marriage.

Registers sometimes add whose widower he was, as in viduus defunctae Annae, widower of the late Anna. The abbreviation vid. can mean either widow or widower.
