German words in old records · card E

ev.

Ev. is short for evangelisch, which in German records means Protestant (usually Lutheran), not "evangelical" in the American sense.

In Germany evangelisch is the ordinary word for the Protestant churches, whether Lutheran, Reformed or united. Ev.-luth. means Evangelical Lutheran. A record that gives a family's religion as ev. tells you to search the Protestant church books rather than the Catholic ones.

Translating it as evangelical can mislead an American reader, for whom the word suggests a revival church. In a German record it simply means Protestant. Some modern documents also use ev. for eventuell (possibly), but next to a name it means the religion.
