German words in old records · card S

Sohn

Sohn is German for "son"; in records it often appears as Sohn des (son of), shortened to S.d., followed by the father's name.

Sohn means son, and the plural is Söhne. In marriage and death entries a man is often identified through his father: Sohn des verstorbenen Bauern Martin Gruber means the son of the late farmer Martin Gruber, a clue that the father had died by then.

Common phrases are ehelicher Sohn (legitimate son), lediger Sohn (unmarried son) and jüngster Sohn (youngest son). The female counterpart is Tochter.
