German words in old records · card T

Tochter

Tochter is German for "daughter"; in records it often appears as Tochter des (daughter of), shortened to T.d., before the father's name.

Tochter means daughter, and the plural is Töchter. A bride in a marriage register is usually identified as the Tochter of her father, often with his occupation and village, which gives you the next generation back in a single line.

Short forms are T.d. (Tochter des or der) and T.v. (Tochter von). Phrases such as eheliche Tochter (legitimate daughter) and ledige Tochter (unmarried daughter) are common.
