Denizen

A denizen was a foreigner granted some rights of a native subject, such as owning land, without full naturalization, a status from English law.

The Crown could make an alien a denizen by letters patent. Blackstone called it a middle state between alien and natural-born subject: a denizen could buy land or receive it by will but could not inherit it, and could not sit in Parliament or hold any office of trust. Full naturalization, by contrast, took an act of Parliament.

The word lived on in U.S. law. Wartime statutes define enemy aliens as natives, citizens, denizens or subjects of a hostile nation. In everyday English a denizen is simply an inhabitant.
