frazione

Frazione is Italian for a hamlet, a village or district that is part of a larger comune; records of its people are kept by that comune.

Frazione means a fraction, part of a whole, and in geography a hamlet that belongs to a comune. The hamlet has its own name but no town hall, so its births, marriages and deaths are written in the registers of the comune it belongs to.

This matters when a family story names a place you cannot find in the list of comuni: it may be a frazione. Look it up in a gazetteer to find its comune. The words contrada and località can also name parts of a town.
