vedova

Vedova is Italian for "widow," a woman whose husband has died; vedova di is followed by the late husband's name.

Vedova comes from Latin vidua and means widow. In marriage and death acts it describes a woman's civil status in place of nubile, unmarried, and the phrase vedova di or vedova del fu names her late husband, a direct lead to an earlier marriage.

Italian women usually kept their own surname in records, so a widow is still listed by her birth surname with her husband named after it. The masculine form is vedovo, widower, and vedovato means widowed.
