avia

Avia is Latin for "grandmother"; avia materna is the mother's mother.

Avia means grandmother. In registers that name grandparents, avia paterna is the father's mother and avia materna the mother's mother, often with her maiden name.

Grandmothers were also frequent godmothers. If the matrina shares a surname with one of the parents, she may be the avia.
