honestus

Honestus (feminine honesta) is Latin for respectable or honorable, a courtesy word placed before the name of an ordinary decent person.

Honestus means respectable or honorable. Priests used it as a polite label in front of names, as in honestus Joannes Müller, much as we might say Mr.

It tells you about social standing, not about a person's character. Higher ranks got grander words, so the choice of label can hint at a family's status.
