matertera
Matertera is Latin for an aunt on the mother's side, the mother's sister.
Matertera means maternal aunt, the sister of your mother. It pairs with amita, the father's sister, just as avunculus and patruus split uncles by side.
When a godmother is described as matertera, she shares the mother's maiden name and parents. That can confirm a mother's family when her own baptism is hard to find.
As seen in a recordLatin baptism register, godparents' line, 1790s
Matrina: Catharina Lang, matertera baptizati
