Latin in records · card N

notarius

Notarius is Latin for a notary, a clerk or a secretary, someone who wrote down official business.

Notarius first named a person who took down speech in shorthand in an official role. From that came the senses clerk, secretary and notary.

In a parish book it may describe a witness or godparent. In civil and notarial records it is the man who wrote the document, and his name can lead you to other records he made.
