Latin in records · card Q

quondam

Quondam is Latin for "formerly"; in genealogical records it usually means "the late," as in filius quondam Petri, son of the late Peter.

Quondam means once or formerly. In parish registers and notarial records it usually stands before a name and means the late, so filius quondam Petri is son of the late Peter, telling you the father had died before the entry was written.

It is sometimes shortened to q. or spelled condam. Less often it marks a former office, as in quondam parochus, the former parish priest, so read the whole phrase before assuming a death.
