uxor

Uxor is Latin for "wife": uxor Joannis means "wife of John," and et uxor (et ux.) means "and his wife."

Uxor means wife and turns up in church registers, burial entries and Latin legal phrases. A burial entry such as Anna uxor Joannis Miller identifies the woman through her husband.

In English deeds and deed indexes the phrase et uxor, often shortened to et ux., means and his wife. Her own name may only appear in the full document.
