Sheriff's sale
A sheriff's sale is a public auction of property by the sheriff under a court order, usually to pay a debt or judgment.
A sheriff's sale is a forced sale. After a court judgment against an owner, the sheriff seized land or goods and sold them at public auction, then gave the buyer a sheriff's deed.
For family history it is a sign of debt or hard times. The deed and court case can tell you when a family lost its land, and sometimes why they moved on.
