Veterans Administration

The Veterans Administration was the federal veterans' benefits agency of 1930 to 1989, formed from the Bureau of Pensions, the Veterans Bureau and the soldiers' homes.

Created in 1930, it brought together the Bureau of Pensions, the U.S. Veterans Bureau and the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. It handled compensation for service-related disability or death, rehabilitation, medical care, burial, pensions, education and home loans. On March 15, 1989, it became the cabinet-level Department of Veterans Affairs.

Its custody explains why some old pension files are not at NARA: Civil War and later files still active about 1928 stayed with the VA as C or XC files.
