emigrantprotokoll

An emigrantprotokoll is a Norwegian police register of emigrants leaving the country, kept from 1867 and searchable in the Digitalarkivet.

Norway ordered the police or port authorities to keep these protocols in 1867, and most that survive up to about 1930 can be found in the Digitalarkivet. They were kept at the police offices until around 1970.

The protocols record people approved to leave, so foreigners, who did not have to register with the Norwegian police, are missing. Ships' passenger lists were usually private papers and, where they survive, are mostly in the country of arrival.
