udvandret

Udvandret (modern utvandret) means "emigrated"; in Norwegian records it usually marks a person who left the country for America.

Between 1836 and 1915 more than 750,000 Norwegians emigrated to North America, and in Europe only Ireland lost a larger share of its people. Most went to the United States and, later, many to Canada.

A utvandrer is an emigrant and utvandring is emigration. In a church book the word often appears in the list of people who moved out, with just Amerika as the destination; the police emigrant protocols, kept from 1867, are the next place to look.
