Amerika

In Swedish records Amerika means America; utflyttad till Amerika (moved to America) is how the parish recorded an emigrant leaving.

About 1.5 million Swedes left for North America between the mid-1800s and the early 1920s, most of them for the United States, with the peak in the 1880s. When they left, the pastor wrote the destination in the household roll and moving register as Amerika, Nordamerika or Norra Amerika.

The word can mean the whole continent or, more loosely, the United States, where most emigrants went. The exact place in America is rarely given, so take the date and parish to passenger lists and American records.
