Norwegian words in old records · card U

ugift

Ugift means "unmarried" or "never married"; Norwegian censuses and marriage entries use it for a person who had not been married before.

The prefix u- means not, and NAOB defines ugift as not married and never having been married. So a widow is enke, not ugift, and an unmarried man may also be called ungkarl.

The name-by-name censuses of 1801 and of 1865 onward record each person's marital status, and a marriage entry notes whether each partner was single or widowed.
