ungkarl
Ungkarl means "bachelor", an unmarried man of any age; in a Norwegian marriage entry it marks a groom who had never been married.
SNL explains that the word covers young men and also older men who never married, while widowers and divorced men are not counted. In a marriage entry it tells you there is no earlier wife to look for.
Ungkarl is the older spelling and is still the Danish form; modern Norwegian writes ungkar. FamilySearch gives ungkarl simply as bachelor.
