Norwegian words in old records · card U

uægte

Uægte means "illegitimate": a child born to parents who were not married to each other, often marked u in a Norwegian baptism register.

Older books may write ill. or illeg. instead, and some registers have a column, ved uægte Børn af hvem Opgaven er skeet, recording who reported the facts for an illegitimate child. The man named as the father may be called udlagt, alleged.

Until the Castberg children's laws took effect in 1916, a child born outside marriage did not have the same rights to inherit or to take the father's surname. Modern Norwegian writes uekte, and today's law makes almost no distinction.
