enkemand

Enkemand is the old Dano-Norwegian spelling of enkemann, "widower", a man whose wife had died.

Records write enkemand before a man's name or in the status column of a census, and a marriage entry notes whether the groom was a widower. SNL notes that a widower usually remarried, partly so that someone could care for the children, and that a farm household needed both a man and a woman.

When a widower remarried, the marriage entry may give the date of the probate (skifte) held after his first wife's death, which points you to the probate records.
