konfirmert

Konfirmert means "confirmed": a Norwegian youth who passed the church's catechism test and took first communion, usually at 14 to 16.

A royal ordinance of 1736 made confirmation compulsory in Denmark-Norway, and it stayed compulsory until 1912. No one could marry in the Lutheran church without being confirmed, so the register is a useful check on a person's age and home parish.

Before 1815 the entries give little more than name, age and residence. After 1814 they add the birth or baptism date, the household where the youth lived and notes on knowledge and conduct, and from the 1830s the parents. Older books head the list Confirmerede.
