Chair caner

A chair caner wove the seats and backs of chairs from strips of rattan cane, either for new chairs or in repairing worn ones.

Caning is the craft of weaving rattan peel or cane into furniture. It differs from wicker, which can be woven from willow, reed, rattan or other materials. The cane comes from rattan vines of Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia, stripped of bark and cut into narrow strips.

Sugar cane and bamboo, sometimes called cane in the American South, have nothing to do with the trade.
