Forester

A forester managed and cared for woodland, planning cutting and replanting and guarding the trees, game and other resources.

A forester practices forestry, the managing of forests for timber, game, recreation and conservation. Foresters are employed by private industry, federal and state land agencies and consulting firms, and some work in tree nurseries growing seedlings.

Wiktionary also gives an obsolete sense, a person who simply lived in a forest, so in very old records a forester may be a forest dweller rather than an officer.
