Hackman
A hackman drove a hack, a horse-drawn carriage for hire, much like a cab driver in a city.
A hack, short for hackney carriage, was a carriage that anyone could hire for a ride. Hackmen waited at depots, hotels and stands for fares.
In census returns of cities from the mid 1800s to about 1910, hackman, hack driver and cab driver mean much the same thing.
