Stage driver

A stage driver drove a stagecoach, a horse-drawn coach carrying passengers, mail and parcels on a regular route.

Stagecoaches ran between towns on set routes, changing horses at stations along the way, which is why each leg was called a stage. The driver handled a team of four or six horses.

Stage lines thrived before railroads and lasted longer in the West and in rural areas.
