Market gardener

A market gardener grew vegetables, fruit or flowers on a small plot to sell fresh at local markets or to stores and restaurants.

Market gardens were small, intensively worked plots, often on the edge of a town, growing many kinds of crops by hand. The gardener or family usually carried the produce to market themselves.

Census enumerators in 1900 were told to tell apart laborers working for gardeners and nurserymen from farm laborers, so watch for garden laborer on the same page.
