Truck farmer

A truck farmer grew vegetables and fruit for sale in nearby city markets; truck here means market produce, not motor trucks.

Truck farms ringed many American cities and shipping towns, growing crops such as tomatoes, cabbages, potatoes and berries for fresh sale. They were bigger than a market garden but smaller than a general farm.

The 1930 census instructions mention children working on a truck farm. The term was in use long before motor trucks, so do not read it as a driver.
