Warper

A warper prepared the warp, the long lengthwise threads of cloth, winding hundreds of them side by side onto a beam ready for the loom.

Every piece of woven cloth needs a warp, the threads that run its full length, and a weft that crosses them. The warper ran the machine or frame that laid out the warp threads evenly and at the right tension, a job that had to be exact or the weaving would fail.

In a census a warper is almost always a textile mill hand. The word has nothing to do with something being bent or warped.
