Polish words in old records · card A

akt

Akt is Polish for an official record or entry; akta are records, as in akta urodzin (birth records) and akta stanu cywilnego (civil records).

In vital records akt means one entry or act, and the plural akta means records. Series are named akta urodzin (births), akta małżeństw or ślubów (marriages) and akta zejść or zgonów (deaths). Akta stanu cywilnego are civil status records, which in Russian Poland were kept by the parish priest as civil registrar.

Each narrative entry ends with a closing formula beginning akt ten, this record, saying it was read aloud and signed. The entry number at the side is its number for that year in the register.
