Polish words in old records · card C

córka

Córka is Polish for "daughter"; córka Tomasza means "daughter of Tomasz," with the father's name in the genitive.

Córka means daughter. In marriage and death entries a woman is identified as córka followed by her parents' names, and the father's name takes the genitive ending -a: córka Tomasza is daughter of Tomasz.

The ending of córka itself also changes: córki is the genitive and córką the instrumental, common in marriage records after między, between. The word for a girl in general is dziewczyna, and a granddaughter is wnuczka.
