nieślubny

Nieślubny is Polish for "illegitimate," born to parents not married to each other (nieślubna for a girl, nieślubne for a child).

Nieślubny means not sanctioned by marriage, and of a child, born outside marriage. It is the opposite of ślubny, wedded or legitimate. Records also use the phrases z nieprawego łoża, from an unlawful bed, and naturalny, natural, for the same thing; prawego łoża means legitimate.

In the narrative birth entries an illegitimate child was sometimes presented by the midwife (akuszerka) instead of the father, and the father's name may be missing. Read the whole entry and its margin before deciding that a father is unknown.
