ochrzczony

Ochrzczony is Polish for "baptized" or "christened" (ochrzczona for a girl); the date beside it is the baptism, which can differ from the birth.

Ochrzczony comes from the verb ochrzcić, to give the sacrament of baptism (chrzest). Parish books of baptisms are called księgi ochrzczonych, books of the baptized.

In the Polish-language registers of 1826 to 1868, one entry covers both events. It opens with the day and place of the baptism, then gives the birth, often as yesterday. The baptism itself is described in the phrase na Chrzcie Świętym odbytym w dniu dzisiejszym, at Holy Baptism performed today, followed by the name given. Record both dates and label each one.
