Swedish words in old records · card B

bonde

Bonde is Swedish for "farmer" or "peasant": in old records, a man who farmed his own or a leased farm, above crofters and servants.

In Swedish rolls bonde, or bonden before a name, marks the head of a farming household. Records use more specific titles too: hemmansägare for an owner of an assessed farm, and torpare or backstugusittare for people with little or no land.

Abbreviations include b. and bond. In very old Swedish the word could also mean husband, but in a household roll it is a farmer.
