hemmansägare
A hemmansägare was the owner of a hemman, an assessed farm: in Swedish records a land-owning farmer, a step above a tenant or crofter.
A hemman was a farm entered in the crown's land books and assessed in mantal, the unit used to set its taxes. The owner was the hemmansägare. Torp and other small holdings had no mantal value and did not count as hemman.
The title signals a family with land, which often means more records: estate inventories, land sales and tax rolls. Older spelling is hemmansegare, abbreviated h.eg. or h.äg.
