Swedish words in old records · card I

inhyses

Inhyses describes a lodger: a person living in someone else's home or on their land without being their servant, often poor or elderly.

An inhyseshjon lived in another household but was not part of its working staff. Many were poor: old people, orphans or disabled people placed with a family by the parish, which paid the household for their keep.

In a household roll inhyses or inh. is written beside the name. Do not take it as a family relationship: a person marked inhyses on a farm is usually not related to the farmer.
