koppor

Koppor (smittkoppor) is Swedish for smallpox; household rolls often have a column noting whether a person had had smallpox or been vaccinated.

Smallpox was a highly contagious disease with high mortality, and koppor appears as a cause of death in older death books. Sweden began vaccinating in 1801 and made it compulsory for children under two in 1816, so household rolls often note vaccination, or nat. for someone who had survived the natural disease.

That column helps tell apart two people with the same name, since one may be marked vaccinated and the other as having had the disease.
