husförhörslängd
A husförhörslängd is a Swedish household examination roll: the parish book listing every household and person, farm by farm, over several years.
Required by the church law of 1686 and common from the later 1700s, the roll was kept only in Sweden and Finland. The pastor visited each household to test reading and catechism, and the book lists everyone, including servants, with birth date and place.
Each volume usually covers 5 to 10 years, arranged by village and farm. Columns record catechism knowledge, communion, smallpox vaccination, marriages, deaths and moves in and out, so you can follow a family from book to book.
Look it up: old jobs, causes of death, Latin, abbreviations, nicknames and more.
