statare

A statare was a married farm laborer on a large Swedish estate, hired by the year and paid mostly in kind: grain, milk, firewood and housing.

The stat was the payment in goods, such as grain, milk, firewood and a potato patch, plus a home in the estate's laborers' housing. Statare were married men hired by the year, and their wives and children often worked on the estate too.

The system was found mainly on large estates in Götaland and parts of Svealand, rarely in Norrland. It ended when cash wages were agreed in 1944, taking effect in 1945. Because contracts ran a year at a time, follow a statare family through the moving notes.
