Cal.
In a census birthplace column, Cal. is the abbreviation for California.
Cal. is an older abbreviation of California, used long before the two letter postal codes. Census takers were allowed to abbreviate state names in the place of birth column, so abbreviated state names are common in the birthplace column of nineteenth century census pages.
Calif. is the other common form. California became a state in 1850, and Cal. as a birthplace grows common after the Gold Rush.
